Clemson University is a top-tier research institution that placed 22nd among top public universities in U.S. News and World Report’s 2009 rankings. The school (for whom the city was named – not the other way around) weaves the technological capabilities of a major university with the intimate social environment of a small college, and it lies just three miles west of Patrick Square. But it is surely the center of the region’s activities. With an emphasis on leadership and innovation, athletics, public service and the community, Clemson University also is integral to the area’s unique character.

Local sports are ruled by Clemson University, which fields 19 teams competing at numerous sites in and around campus, including Frank Howard Field at Memorial Stadium (dubbed “Death Valley” by an oft-defeated opposing coach), Littlejohn Coliseum, Doug Kingsmore Stadium and Riggs Field. But book tickets early – they do go fast!

If you’d rather be part of the action, join the Tiger Rag Cross Country Mountain Bike Race, trek to nearby waterfalls or hike along nature trails. For those who don’t want to miss their daily workout, the Central-Clemson Recreational Center offers a fully equipped, state-of-the-art gym.
