The Vision of Patrick Square

As a tribute to the early settlers of South Carolina, the community of Patrick Square was named after Patrick Calhoun — a legendary Irish immigrant, and one of the area’s first settlers. In the mid 1700s, Patrick Calhoun played an important role in the American Revolution, and also became the first upcountry settler to join the South Carolina legislature — championing for the rights of fellow upcountry settlers. His dedication, perseverance, and strong moral character have influenced a number of people, including his son, John C. Calhoun, who became the seventh Vice President of the United States.

Thomas Green Clemson, Patrick Calhoun’s grandson-in-law, also played an important role in the area’s history, as founder of Clemson University, provider of land, and namesake of the town of Clemson.

Today, Patrick Square wishes to uphold the strength and spirit of early settlers like Patrick Calhoun by creating a community reminiscent of traditional South Carolina villages — where time-honored traditions flourish, and new legacies can begin.
